Vintage Wooden Decorative Hagoita(羽子板) -

Hand-crafted ornament made of wood.

A "羽子板" (hagoita) is a originally rectangular wooden paddle with a handle, used to use for playing a game called "羽根つき" (hanetsuki) and is also known as a "racket."

During the Edo period, it became a tradition to gift hagoita to grandchildren from their maternal grandparents on their first New Year (Hatsugatsu, the first New Year after a child is born).

In Japan, there is a long-standing tradition of decorating with hagoita during the New Year as a talisman for warding off bad luck. Playing hagoita with feathered shuttlecocks at the beginning of the year symbolizes the act of "warding off misfortune.

The designs on hagoita often feature themes from kabuki, Japanese dance, and other traditional performances.
